Personal Collection have joined forces with Kingfisher Journeys and are pleased to provide some options for some of the most exciting and rewarding multi-adventure itineraries located in the Albertine Rift, in the foot of the Virunga Volcanoes
With a focus on safety, quality and attention to detail, our experts draw on their local knowledge to design professional itineraries that work seamlessly in and around Rwanda. We run adventures for guests so that they can explore on foot, by kayak, canoe, mountain bike and road bicycle. Guests can also go birding with top guides, meet artisans and will be fascinated by tea and coffee production. You can engage with local people and have the option to take part in established and respected community based tourism activities.
The activities we combine into seamless adventures include:
Kayaking on Lake Kivu, one of the African Rift Valley’s Great Lakes, with spectacular, blue water and incredible views of the surrounding countryside and Virunga Volcanoes. We get close to birds, spot wildlife, discover rural life, watch unique fishing boats at sunset and explore off the beaten track. On multi-day trips accommodation options include staying at remote guesthouses, beautiful lodges or camping on uninhabited islands. Lake Kivu is the largest lake in Africa to naturally have no hippos or crocodiles.
The Mukungwa River canoe trip which is an interesting half-day adventure though the “thousand hills”, with stunning views of volcanoes, abundant birds and a close up insight into life in rural Rwanda. Close to the Volcanoes National Park, it makes the perfect gentle excursion to enjoy alongside seeing the gorillas.
Mountain biking on the countless tracks that criss-cross this spectacular ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’. Using top quality, professionally maintained bikes and led by experienced, guides, classic options include rides around the Twin Lakes to the Congo Nile Trail along the shores of Lake Kivu.
Road cycling along flat routes or the steep curves that define Rwanda’s volcanic landscape, using pro-level carbon fibre racing bikes, professional riders from Team Rwanda can guide and teach riding techniques.
Authentic cultural activates designed and hosted by established and respected local artisans that give a taste of the beauty and rigor of rural life and Rwandan culture. City tours, African market trips and visits to the vibrant art scene are also available.
